Day 7: Connection and Courage – Walking for New Jersey
Today’s #IWillListen Ruck was a 7-mile walk in honor of New Jersey’s first responders. This morning didn’t go as planned—I was up late Saturday working on a big project, and rather than forcing an early wake-up, I prioritized sleep, knowing it’s foundational to health and resilience. I try to practice the things I tell others. That means trying to get 6 to 9 hours of good sleep. I adjusted my plan and wok up at 7:00 am without an alarm. Very late for me, but I needed it. Unfortunately I missed my 4:00 planned start time.
I taught an 11:00 kettlebell flow class before heading out for the walk.
The kettlebell class was a reminder of how much I love helping people step outside their comfort zones to learn new skills. Watching the class take familiar movements and turn them into a flow was inspiring—awkward at first, but with practice, they began to move with confidence. It’s moments like these that remind me how growth often comes from embracing discomfort.
Later, as I walked, my focus shifted. I learned an Ohio police officer had died by suicide just hours after I completed yesterday’s walk in honor of Ohio’s first responders. It broke my heart. On the trail, I reflected on the isolation that often accompanies such devastating decisions. In those final moments, people may feel disconnected and believe no one is willing to listen or help.
Let me say this clearly: suicide is no one’s fault. It’s the person’s decision, and while friends and loved ones often blame themselves, feeling they missed the signs or didn’t make it clear they were there, that is not the case. What matters is continuing to foster connection, reminding those around us that they are seen, heard, and supported.
If you or someone you know is struggling, please don’t hesitate to reach out. The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available 24/7. Call or text 988, or visit 988lifeline.org. You don’t have to face this alone—there is always someone ready to listen.
