Day 8: Finding Safe Ways to Vent – Walking for Delaware
Tonight, on Day 8 of the #IWillListen Ruck Challenge, I walked one mile in honor of Delaware’s first responders. On average, we lose one first responder each year to suicide in this state—a number that is always one too many. As I reflected on the challenges we face in seeking connection, I was reminded of the importance of finding safe ways to vent, especially when we don’t want to share our struggles publicly.
Needing to vent but not wanting others to know your business is a tough combination. But there are ways to unburden yourself while maintaining privacy. Here are a few options:
- Journaling: Write it out, draw it, or even use the “paper plate” method—get a paper plate and jot down or sketch everything that’s weighing on you. Sometimes seeing it all in one place helps put things in perspective.
- Creativity: Doodle, play music, sing, or find another creative outlet to express yourself. Creativity can be a powerful way to release emotions.
- Talk to a Friend: While it’s easy to fear burdening others, most friends value the opportunity to connect on a deeper level. Vulnerability often invites mutual sharing, strengthening bonds.
- Therapy: If privacy is crucial, a therapist can provide the space you need. The best time to find a therapist is before you need one, much like fixing a roof before it rains.
And remember, if you’re in crisis or need someone to talk to, 988 is always available. This incredible resource connects you to someone who will listen without judgment, offering support whenever you need it.
Let’s not carry our burdens alone. There’s always a way to let it out, to connect, and to find relief. Stay safe, and thank you for walking this journey with me.
