LGBTQ+ Pride Month

June is LGBTQ+ Pride Month, a time to celebrate the progress and accomplishments of the LGBTQ+ community, while also acknowledging the challenges that still need to be addressed. This month is an opportunity for people to come together to celebrate diversity, promote equality, and support the ongoing fight for LGBTQ+ rights.

Pride Month is celebrated in June to commemorate the Stonewall riots, which took place in New York City in June 1969. The riots, which were led by transgender women of color and other members of the LGBTQ+ community, were a response to police raids on gay bars and are widely considered to be the catalyst for the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement.

While the LGBTQ+ community has made significant progress in recent years, including the legalization of same-sex marriage and increased visibility in media and pop culture, there is still much work to be done to achieve full equality and acceptance. LGBTQ+ people continue to face discrimination, harassment, and violence, and there are ongoing debates and legal battles surrounding issues such as transgender rights, conversion therapy, and employment discrimination.

One way to support the LGBTQ+ community during Pride Month and beyond is to educate yourself about LGBTQ+ issues and history, and to take action to promote equality and justice. Here are five ways to get involved:

  1. Attend a Pride event or march. Pride events take place in many cities throughout the month of June, offering opportunities to celebrate and show support for the LGBTQ+ community. Attending a Pride march can be a powerful way to show solidarity, raise awareness, and promote visibility for the LGBTQ+ community.
  2. Support LGBTQ+ organizations. There are many organizations that work to promote LGBTQ+ rights, provide support and resources to LGBTQ+ people, and advocate for change. Consider making a donation or volunteering with a local organization to support their work.
  3. Educate yourself and others. Take time to learn about LGBTQ+ issues and history, and share what you learn with others. Consider reading books, watching films or documentaries, or attending lectures or workshops to deepen your understanding of LGBTQ+ experiences and struggles.
  4. Advocate for change. Whether it’s contacting your elected officials to support LGBTQ+ rights and legislation, or speaking out against discrimination or hate speech, there are many ways to use your voice and influence to promote change and support the LGBTQ+ community.
  5. Support LGBTQ+ artists and creators. One way to promote LGBTQ+ visibility and representation is to support LGBTQ+ artists, writers, and creators. This can include buying books or art by LGBTQ+ creators, attending performances or exhibitions, or sharing and promoting the work of LGBTQ+ artists on social media.

If you or someone you know is experiencing discrimination, harassment, or violence because of their LGBTQ+ identity, it’s important to seek help and support. The Trevor Project provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBTQ+ young people, and can be reached at 1-866-488-7386. The Human Rights Campaign offers resources and support for LGBTQ+ people, including a list of resources for coming out, finding support, and taking action.
