What Is the Default Mode Network?
Ever notice how your mind drifts when you’re not focused on a task? That’s your Default Mode Network (DMN) at work.
The DMN is a set of brain regions that activates during rest, daydreaming, and self-reflection—and quietly powers down when you’re focused on the outside world. It’s involved in recalling memories, imagining the future, and thinking about yourself or others.
Some researchers call it the brain’s “autopilot.”
Too much DMN activity is linked to rumination, anxiety, and overthinking, while practices like meditation can help quiet it down, creating more mental clarity and emotional balance.
