The Nine Domains · Social

Social Fitness

Building the capacity to create belonging, maintain meaningful relationships, give and receive support, practice reciprocity, and participate in community.

Explore the domain ↓

What this domain means

Social fitness is not about becoming more outgoing or collecting more friends. It is about the quality of the relationships and communities that help you feel connected, supported, useful, and understood.

Different relationships serve different purposes. One person may be who you call when something goes wrong. Another makes you laugh, challenges your thinking, shares an interest, or simply makes you feel welcome. No single relationship needs to provide everything.

Fitness in this domain means maintaining the connections that matter, asking for help clearly, allowing trusted people to show up for you, contributing to others, celebrating their good news, and participating in places where you can be known. Belonging is not something we only receive. We help create it.

Fit for Function, Ready for Life.

Four essential capacities

What does social fitness include?

01

Belonging

Cultivate relationships and groups where you can give support, receive support, contribute, and be yourself.

02

Maintenance

Give meaningful relationships the attention they deserve through check-ins, invitations, follow-up, and shared experiences.

03

Reciprocity

Notice the pattern of give and take over time, including who initiates, asks for help, stays curious, and makes room.

04

Participation

Create community by showing up, contributing, learning names, offering help, inviting others, and returning regularly.

A useful reframe

Fitness does not mean having a huge circle.

You can be independent, capable, and comfortable alone while still needing meaningful connection. Social fitness means becoming more intentional about who you connect with, how you show up for others, where support already exists, and where you choose to belong.

Pause and take inventory

Where are you right now?

This is not a grade. It is a snapshot. Honest awareness gives you a useful place to begin.

  1. Who helps you feel connected, supported, useful, or understood?
  2. Which meaningful relationship has gradually slipped toward the edges of your life?
  3. How comfortable are you asking for help clearly and allowing trusted people to show up for you?
  4. Where could you participate more intentionally to strengthen your sense of community or someone else’s?

Your journal

How would you rate your current social fitness?

Choose the number that best reflects your current capacity, not your potential or your past.

Return to your Journey Journal and capture what comes to mind.

Try this

Start where you are.

More is not always better. Choose the level of action that matches your capacity today, then build from there.

Right now · 2 minutes

Reach out to one person.

Send a simple check-in, invitation, or message to someone who matters but has gradually slipped toward the edges of your life.

This week · One choice

Ask for help clearly.

Make one direct, honest request without apologizing, minimizing, overexplaining, or trying to prove that you deserve the help.

Go deeper · Build a practice

Help someone expand good news.

When someone shares something positive, resist redirecting or evaluating it. Become curious, ask a follow-up question, and stay with their experience.
